Woman in Parts

“Anchored by sweeping, calligraphic strokes in dark blue or black, often accented with bright teal, yellow, blue or pink, the ink-on-paper paintings have the spirit of Matisse’s nude cut-outs yet imply the volume of a Beverly Pepper or Brancusi sculpture.”

Sight Unseen, 9th September 2020, Jennifer S. Li

Woman in Parts is a collection of 100 works on paper.
The debut paintings from Simone Brewster came to being during the lock down of 2020, where she began painting as a release, a form of relaxation and expression during a time of unrest and restraint.
The resulting body of work sewed the seeds of her painting practice, an abstract exploration of the restrictions, pressures, emotions and expectations of beauty placed on the female body. The works are a celebration and commentary of the female body.
